Our quotes of the week come from, clockwise from upper left, Rob Portman, Gao Fu, Beth Bell and Boris Johnson.

Quotes of the week

• “It’s disappointing, because I do believe these vaccines are really important.” – U.S. Sen. Rob Portman. The Ohio Republican said he hopes reports regarding blood clots connected to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine won’t make people more hesitant to take the vaccine. Portman took the J&J vaccine and did not experience side effects.

• “We will solve the issue that current vaccines don’t have very high protection rates. It’s now under consideration whether we should use different vaccines from different technical lines for the immunization process.” – Gao Fu, director of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, admitting in a press conference that the nation’s vaccine efficacy rates need improving. It was a rare acknowledgment from China’s top disease-control official about current vaccines offering low protection against the virus.

• “I don’t want to send the message there is something fundamentally wrong with this vaccine. It’s a very rare event. Nothing in life is risk-free. But I want to be able to understand and defend the decision I’ve made based on a reasonable amount of data.” – Dr. Beth Bell of the University of Washington and adviser to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Authorities are studying blood clots tied to the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. The clots were found in six cases of more than 7 million.

• “We have now passed another hugely significant milestone in our vaccine programme by offering jabs to everyone in the nine highest risk groups. That means more than 32 million people have been given the precious protection vaccines provide against Covid-19. … We will now move forward with completing essential second doses and making progress towards our target of offering all adults a vaccine by the end of July.” – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson. The United Kingdom has reached its vaccination target: Doses have been offered to everyone over 50, the clinically vulnerable and social-care workers, the government said.
